PROJECT “BRASILEIRINH💚S IN NEW YORK”:
Promoting the learning of Portuguese and interest in Brazilian culture among Children.
COURSE OBJECTIVE: Promote the learning of Portuguese and an interest in Promote the Brazilian culture among children.
ABOUT THE TEACHER
Silcia Susie has a master’s degree and doctorate from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Since she was an undergraduate, she was interested in bilingual studies for children and has published academic papers in this area.This remains her professional and academic interest until today. She is the founder and director of a digital English school for Brazilian professionals, Fully Fluent Academy (FFA). In Brazil, she had extensive experience as an English teacher in English language teaching schools, the longest at Cultura Inglesa, where she taught for almost 10 years. She served for four years as the principal for one Cultura Inglesa’s branches in the state of Rio Grande Do Norte. She also coordinated and created bilingual projects in different schools in Rio Grande do Norte. She has lived in New York since March 2022 and is currently an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at the Spanish-American Institute in Manhattan.
METHODOLOGY:
Classes are taught exclusively in Portuguese by the native Brazilian teacher Susie. Learning happens through a play-based approach using games, music, arts and crafts, puppets, and storytelling as part of a playful and interactive methodology.
Each class has some pre-literacy activities (word recognition and sentence formation), adapted to the student’s age and skill;
In each class, the student completes worksheets to consolidate learning of the content. At the end of each session (12 weeks), each child receives their personalized folder with all the activities carried out in class.
At the beginning and throughout the project, families receive suggestions for materials to be purchased to provide formal contact with the Portuguese language through books and games in Portuguese to be accessed in the family environment. In addition, parents receive links suggesting activities that their children can do at home, such as cartoons or game applications and interactive digital activities.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
- Children of Brazilian parents who live in New York and the child does not speak Portuguese or needs more contact with the Portuguese language.
- Children with one Brazilian parent.
- Children of non-Brazilian parents who are interested in Brazilian culture.
AGE RANGE: children aged 4 to 8
NUMBER OF SPACES: Maximum 6 children. Classes start with a minimum of 2 students.

COURSE DURATION: 12 weeks each season sessions (Fall, Winter, spring and Summer).
CLASS TIMES:
Weekdays : From 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Saturdays: From 10:00 am to 11:30 am
LOCATION: On sunny days classes take place in a park in Gramercy that is safe and will allow an active learning and play approach. The forecast is that we will have a mild autumn, giving the advantage of holding the majority of classes outdoors.
On rainy or cold days, classes will be held in a Brazilian cafe near Union Square. (A note will be sent in the morning via WhatsApp to the parents, after checking the day’s weather). It’s a cozy place, suitable with a table for children and the opportunity to taste Brazilian cheese bread when classes take place there.

• 10% discount for paying the entire session (3 months) at once
Payment is required in advance for at least 4 sessions. There is a 5% discount for pre-payment of 8 or more sessions.
